There are no rules when it comes to your wedding day. Sarah and Matt proved that in the best way. They chose to elope privately, just the two of them, and then gathered their people a week later for a full reception celebration at The Sage in downtown Birmingham, AL. It was intentional, relaxed, and fully them.
If you have ever felt torn between an intimate ceremony and a big party, this is your permission slip. You can do both. You can exchange vows quietly and still have the dance floor of your dreams later. That freedom is what made this reception feel so joyful from the second guests walked in.

The Sage is one of my favorite spaces for Birmingham, AL Weddings because it truly is a blank canvas. Located in the Pepper Place district, this Birmingham Venue offers over 5,000 square feet of flexible indoor space, plus an outdoor courtyard that allows everything to flow seamlessly.
Inside, you will find exposed brick, high ceilings, and large garage style doors that open to the courtyard. The natural light alone is reason enough to love it. The space includes a built in bar, access to a catering kitchen, and several included amenities. They provide round tables and gold Chiavari chairs, but they also maintain an open vendor policy if that’s more your speed (with a licensed caterer requirement.)

This Birmingham venue was built with versatility in mind. It can seat just over 100 guests for a formal dinner, or up to around 300 for a cocktail style reception. That flexibility makes it a strong choice whether you are planning a smaller wedding or a high energy party.
My favorite thing about this venue Birmingham couples choose is the ability to make it your own. It is central to downtown, LGBTQ+ friendly, and the indoor outdoor flow gives you room to breathe. You are not boxed into one aesthetic. You can build whatever atmosphere you want.

Sarah and Matt leaned all the way in with their celebration.
Bright pink and orange ceiling installations floated above the reception space. Disco balls caught the light. Citrus details layered the tables alongside colorful candles and bold florals by Poppy and Snail. Their invitations featured green and orange florals, which tied everything together from paper to party.
The bride’s braided updo was a moment all on its own, finished with a celestial gold comb that felt playful and editorial. They had two wedding cakes, emotional speeches, and a packed dance floor thanks to their DJ. Meanwhile, guests slipped into the photo booth and grabbed another drink from the bar.

Because The Sage allows the space to transform so easily, the entire evening felt immersive. It felt like a disco garden party tucked into downtown Birmingham.
As the night wrapped up, bubbles filled the courtyard and a yellow vintage cab whisked them away. This celebration was bright & full of people who love and support them. And it never once felt like a production they did not want.
If you are planning your own Birmingham AL wedding celebration, remember this: you get to decide what it looks like. You can elope, host a reception later, and fill the room with citrus and disco balls. The rules are yours to write!
