There is something powerful about choosing to document your family exactly as you are. Not dressed up in a field or posed stiffly in a studio. Just at home in your space in the rooms where your real life unfolds.
This session with the Hanner family was everything I love about photographing families in their own environment. It was colorful, playful, a little chaotic, and completely honest. And that is exactly the point.

When families ask about in-home sessions, the first concern is almost always the house. They wonder if their home is clean and styled enough. And if those two things don’t come up, it’s: Is there enough light?
My unfiltered opinion as a professional photographer? It does not need to look like a magazine. That kind of defeats the purpose, to be honest.

The magic of family photography sessions at home is not about perfection. It is about presence. After all, your kids know where their toys are. They know which couch cushion is their spot and the hallway they sprint down every single day. Because they are comfortable, the laughter is real, the interactions are natural, and no one feels like they are performing.
In the Hanner home, that meant wooden puzzles laid out on display, favorite books stacked nearby, and siblings drifting in and out of each other’s space. At one point, their cat scratched at the door trying to join in. We kept it, obviously, because that’s real life.
You are not hiring me to stage your family. You are inviting me to observe it.

One of my favorite parts of this session was how much personality their home carried. Every room felt intentional and lived in.
Their youngest son’s nursery was a standout. Mustard yellow and white tones filled the space. An orange vintage-inspired crib anchored the room. A colorful rug and playful wall decor added depth and warmth. These are the details that will not exist forever. The crib will be replaced, the decor will change as their little one grows, and that is why it matters now.

We also spent time in their family room where the whole bunch piled up on their sofa. The older siblings snuggled in close to their youngest brother. There was movement, noise, and overlapping conversations. The real moments & interactions with this family in their element is what made it beautiful.
Family photos do not have to mean perfectly coordinated outfits and everyone smiling at the camera. It can mean movie nights on the couch, bedtime stories, and documenting the space where your children feel safest.

In case no one has told you: you do not need a milestone to schedule photos. You do not need to wait until the house feels calmer. This season, even if it feels loud and messy, is worth remembering.
In-home sessions allow me to step into your world and find the light inside it. A professional eye can turn a simple hallway into something cinematic. A window in the nursery becomes soft and glowing. The couch where you collapse at the end of the day becomes a place of connection.
These are the moments you will miss. Not the perfectly styled ones; the ordinary Tuesday night ones.
