Family

Returning clients are one of the coolest parts of being a photographer. There’s something special about being invited into a family’s home year after year and watching their story unfold.

I’ve been photographing the Trammell family since 2018, and every session with them feels like catching up with old friends. Over the years, I’ve watched their family grow from two energetic boys to a family of five with the addition of Lucy, who brings plenty of personality wherever she goes.

This session took place at home in Birmingham, which is exactly where this family shines. There was no rushing from one location to another or worrying about whether the kids will cooperate in an unfamiliar environment. Just a regular day at home with the people they love most.

One of the reasons I love photographing families at home is because no two sessions are ever alike. Every family has their own routines, traditions, favorite spaces, and little details that make their home feel like theirs. Some families spend the session baking cookies in the kitchen. Others pile onto the couch for story time or backyard adventures. The beauty of an in-home session is that it naturally reflects who you are right now.

Your home already holds pieces of your story. Maybe it’s an antique piece of furniture passed down through generations. Sometimes it’s artwork your children made years ago hanging on the refrigerator. It could even be framed family photos tucked into the background of new family photos. There’s something fun about documenting the spaces and objects that have already become part of your family history. Most importantly, everyone is comfortable. Kids have access to their favorite toys, snacks, and comfort items. Parents can relax a little more. The result is a gallery that feels personal because it is.

The Trammells have a home full of personality, and I loved incorporating those details throughout their session. Their style leans heavily into mid-century modern design, with thoughtful touches in every room. One standout space was their incredible pink bathroom, which felt like a work of art all on its own. We also spent time in their living room, where an impressive vinyl collection and piano created the perfect backdrop for a few quiet moments between mom and dad. That relaxed atmosphere is one of the biggest advantages of staying at home for family photos. Real life naturally unfolds around you, and those moments are often the ones you’ll treasure most years from now.

My documentary-style sessions are about presence, not performance. Everyday life already holds enough magic without having to focus on perfectly coordinated outfits & poses. That’s definitely true of the Trammel family because this crew is always so fun & laid back. Lucy, their youngest, is a total diva in the best way and incorporating her story was one of my favorite components of their session.

During Hannah’s anatomy scan during pregnancy, they learned that Lucy would be born with a clubbed foot. What they didn’t anticipate was that Lucy’s journey would include much more: bilateral hip, knee, and elbow dislocations, as well as a cleft palate. Since birth, she has amazed everyone around her with her determination and progress. You’ll notice her pink walker appeared throughout the session along with her feeding tube in some of the images. These aren’t details to hide, they’re part of her story, and they represent the strength, resilience, and love that surrounds her every day.

Years from now, these photographs will remind them not only of what life looked like, but of everything they moved through together. That’s the value of documenting real life. The ordinary moments eventually become the ones that matter most.
