As a family photographer in Birmingham, AL, I live for the candid moments during sessions. Real life with kids can be loud, messy, and rambunctious, and I welcome it all while I shoot. For the Hudson family, we chose a local park for the location. It was the perfect place to set the scene for those everyday moments to unfold naturally.

My Favorite Location for Family Photography Birmingham

In addition to photography, I’m also a mom, so I completely understand reality with kids. If you’re nervous that your family session is going to involve bribing your crew to be still & quiet, don’t be. My goal is to keep your session low-fuss and above all fun and enjoyable, which is part of why I love parks for photos.

Parks offer effortless beauty with their lush greenery, tall trees, open skies, and golden light. Props or a studio setup aren’t necessary either because nature does all the work for you. The open space makes it ideal for kids to be able to run, explore, and play instead of forcing poses. 

When they’re allowed to be kids, it leads to genuine smiles (not fake “say cheese” ones), natural movement, and their real personality shines through. These are the photos you’ll actually treasure.

Outdoor Family Photos Birmingham Alabama

The Hudson family came prepared to play and enjoy their afternoon at the park. They really let go & let me capture the play, which led to some great candid shots for them to look back on. Because they fully embraced letting the kids run and explore, the entire session was very relaxed for everyone. These playful moments are exactly why I always encourage parents not to stress about perfection during family sessions. Kids don’t need to sit perfectly still for beautiful images to happen. Some of the most meaningful photos come from the movement, laughter, and chaos that naturally unfold when families are simply spending quality time together.

It felt less like a photoshoot and more like a memory in the making. I was able to document their authentic interactions and tons of sweet, unscripted moments. This made for emotional, storytelling images, which is why I’m super into candid family park sessions. The gallery becomes this chapter of childhood & your family’s story memorialized in a combination of full color and black and white. The realness is unmatched!

Incorporating Play for Family Portraits Birmingham

Much of the session was spent exploring different areas of the park and playground. The two older Hudson children splashed and waded barefoot through a creek. We gave them the space to have their own adventures and interactions, which made for some of my favorite shots. Mom and Dad took turns pushing them on the swing set and they came prepared with toys as well which was tons of fun. The littlest Hudson cruised in a car stroller while the older brothers rode their scooters. Rocks were climbed, silly faces were made, and the Hudson family left with a gallery full of images that show each colorful personality.
